A Professional Development Course

This course is designed specifically for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) who provide care and community support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through six comprehensive modules, you will develop a working understanding of mental health conditions, the principles of crisis de-escalation, and the communication and ethical skills that define excellent professional practice. No prior mental health training is required — this course begins from the foundation and builds toward confident, informed practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Objective 1 Describe the core responsibilities, ethical obligations, and professional standards of the Direct Support Professional role. Objective 2 Distinguish between intellectual disability and mental illness, and identify common psychiatric diagnoses encountered in direct support settings.
Objective 3 Explain the principles of de-escalation and apply the Crisis Development Model to recognize and respond to escalating situations. Objective 4 Demonstrate active listening and empathetic communication techniques that support emotional regulation and de-escalation.
Objective 5 Recognize signs of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation, and fulfill mandatory reporting responsibilities appropriately. Objective 6 Apply People First language consistently in professional communication, documentation, and direct interaction.
Objective 7 Identify the role of self-awareness and self-care in maintaining professional effectiveness and preventing burnout. Objective 8 Integrate mental health awareness, ethical practice, and communication skills into daily direct support interactions as a cohesive professional approach.
