Course Description

This course provides health care professionals with a foundational understanding of client rights, ethical obligations, person-centered planning, self-determination, and the principles of dignified mental health care. Designed for direct-care staff, allied health professionals, and clinical support teams, the course equips learners with practical knowledge they can apply immediately in their workplace. No prior mental health training is required.

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define client rights in health care settings and explain the historical and legal foundations that protect them.
  2. Identify the key rights afforded to mental health clients, including informed consent, confidentiality, and the right to refuse treatment.
  3. Recognize signs of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, and understand mandatory reporting obligations.
  4. Describe the seven principles of mental health care and apply them to daily interactions with clients.
  5. Explain self-determination and the five principles that guide individual-directed care and support planning.
  6. Develop an understanding of person-centered planning and how it guides the creation of a client’s Plan of Care.
  7. Apply core bioethical principles and due process protections in mental health care practice.
  8. Demonstrate a commitment to dignity, respect, and professional conduct in every client interaction.
